ETF2L (European Team Fortress 2 League) is a community project and is the world’s largest competitive Team Fortress 2 league. ETF2L hosts both 6v6 and Highlander leagues, including many other cups.

The site went live on November 11th, 2007, and has since been running 16 6v6 seasons (the "All F*cking Summer Season" from 2010 is excepted from the official chronology), 4 Highlander seasons and the Highlander Community Challenge in 2010/2011 with 846 teams.

The organisation is currently lead by the head admins of emb and Permzilla. Previous head admins are Sonny Black, CanFo, dAyKiLLeR, DeNeusbeer, Kop, d2m, Dave, RaCio, SnowiE and Crasp.

As of today, for all competitions that were held at ETF2L, a total of almost €14,000 in prize money was paid out and hardware prizes worth over €10,000 were provided.

Format
ETF2L is currently on its 14th 6v6 season and 4th Highlander season. Both 6v6 and Highlander leagues consist of different skill levels, ranging from Division 6 (lowest skill level) to Premiership division (highest skill level). Divisions usually have a size of 6 or 8 teams. A season usually consists of 5 or 7 weeks of regular matches, and a week of playoffs.

Matches usually consist of two maps, each lasting 30 minutes. The following win conditions are used:
* On 5CP maps, the map ends once the time limit runs out or one of the teams scores 5 more points than the opponent. In case of a draw after the time limit ends, a tiebreaker round, known as golden cap, is played. The golden cap ends once one of the wins captures all points or 10 minutes pass, at which point the team currently in possession of the middle point wins.
* King of the Hill maps are played in a best of 5 format (first to 3 wins), without a time limit.
* Attack/Defense and Payload maps are played with stopwatch mode and are played in a best of 3 format. The teams alternate between attacking and defending; if team A defended first in the previous round, team B will be the first to defend in the next round. Most of the time, an A/D or Payload map is the sole map of the week, and as such are not combined with other gamemodes.
* Capture the Flag maps are played as best of 3 rounds, with each round lasting either 10 minutes or until one of the teams captures the intelligence 5 times in a row. If the match ends in a draw, a golden cap round is played. The golden cap round ends after 5 minutes or one capture. If the golden cap ends in another tie, it is played again until a conclusive result is reached.

The top 4 (6v6) or top 3 Premiership teams (Highlander) qualify for the playoffs. Playoffs games are played in a best of 3 maps format. The lowest-ranked team faces the second lowest-ranked team, and the winner of the match faces the team ranked above both of

The second last Premiership team faces the second Division 1 team in a relegation playoff, also played in a best of 3 maps format.
The combination of high splash and direct damage, four rocket clipsize, knockback and the ability to rocket jump make this the most popular choice for almost every soldier.
| align="left"| The Direct Hit is a spinoff of the default primary weapon, allowing for precise shots due to the reduced spread and buffed damage. Granting minicrits for airshots and dealing buffed damage to buildings, the Direct Hit is a great weapon to counter jumping soldiers, or to take out the enemy sentry. The projectiles also travel 80% faster
This makes the black box ideal for roaming around the map without a medic. Pioneered by Vhalin, the black box can be used effectively if you can land your rockets with accuracy.
| align="left"| The Beggar's Bazooka is perhaps the most unique rocket launcher out of the 7 choices. Instead of having 4 rockets loaded like most others, it starts with zero loaded, and the player is required to hold down their Primary Attack button to load the rockets. Only 3 rockets can be held at one time, and loading additional rockets will cause the launcher to overload, damaging the Soldier and any players in the immediate area. However, the Soldier can intentionally overload, and use the damage to jump across large areas, similar to a rocket jump, albeit much more powerful. A bomb from a soldier holding the Bazooka is nearly unstoppable. The explosion from overloading the chamber can be used to rocket jump with the full three rockets in the clip, and when a glitch was found to allow holding all three rockets indefinitely, the weapon was quickly banned in all leagues.

As a Soldier, you can perform a rocket jump by jumping and shooting a rocket near yourself simultaneously. This maneuver turns the second slowest class in TF2 after the Heavy into one of the most mobile, evasive and aggressive forces in the game. Creative jumping can be used to avoid enemies, soar over map obstacles, and damage your opponents from a place they'll rarely look: the sky above them. However, this comes at the cost of the user's health.

6v6 Roamer
In the 6v6 ruleset, the roaming soldier rocket jumps frequently for mobility. As the medic is usually busy with the pocket and demo, the roamer will jump to health packs and away from the combo. For this reason most roamers will use the gunboats instead of the shotgun in order to jump around while taking less damage. This was only recently allowed in the ETF2L league rules.

Knowledge of jumping can be what makes a good roamer great. Escaping, bombing, rollouts, and all around movement includes jumping.

Rollouts
With most rollouts, the roamer will have to rocket jump to mid as the medic heals him, while the pocket will 'escape plan.' This is done so that when the roamer reaches mid, the pocket will have crit heals (Take a look here for more details on crit heals under the 'Special' box) As a medic, it is important to make sure that the roamer is at or very close to 300 HP, as it will allow for more freedom at the mid fight and a better chance of surviving.

Bombing
Frequently used to get a Pick and deal overall damage. Most of the time the roamer won't survive a bomb, but the point is that the suicide is worth the pick. Good chain jumps and creative bombs can make the difference between getting an important pick for your team and getting airshot by the other team's pocket.

Distractions
In 6s, a soldier streaking across the sky makes for a pretty good distraction. As the roamer, his job is to create as many advantages as possible for his team. If the team really needs to push, but are too busy getting Spammed, a jumping soldier will draw attention away from at least one opposing player, possibly creating an opening for their team.

Airshots
Often when a roaming soldier attempts to bomb a combo to get an important pick it will fall to the pocket soldier to stop them. The most effective but difficult way of doing this is to Airshot them. When you achive an airshot you have the right to make a lot of noise and shout down your mic about how good you are.
The soldier is a class that can do damage at both close and long ranges. Typically, a standard 6v6 lineup will include 2 soldiers; 1 roamer and 1 pocket. The pocket soldier tends to protect the team's medic while the roaming soldier watches the flanks and makes plays.

As a pocket soldier, your primary job is to keep your team's medic alive. The Pocket also has roles to fulfill in Mumble (or other communication program), because, in some teams, he is going to be the Main Caller. Generally, the pocket soldier leads his team into battles; he soaks up damage while putting out his own damage. Most pocket soldiers equip a shotgun for the extra damage output to defend against enemy players. Remember, your job is to protect the medic, as his life is worth more than yours is. If saving your medic means sacrificing yourself, you should do it. To be a good pocket, you also need to have a very good understanding of 6v6, something the community commonly calls 'game sense'.

Roaming Soldier
Main article:Roamer

The roaming soldier typically has the Regular Rocket Launcher, Gunboats & Escape Plan equipped. Of course, there are different loadouts being used, but this one is the most popular one by far. The roamer has different roles to fullfil in 6v6. The first and most basic one is to create distractions for his team so that they can push or take an advantage of it. His second role is to be on the flank with the Scouts during stalemates to try to get a pick, or simply to just block the enemy flank. The Roamer's third role is quite similar to the first one. When his team is at a uber disadvantage, or simply during a stalemate, the roamer will often be buffed to 300 health and sent in to try to get the medic to pop his uber, or to kill the medic. In certain situations, the roamer may offclass to try to gain an advantage.
